recent work

A small series of four paintings recently created, inspired by the possible inner landscapes constructed within our bodies. This could be the beginning of new internal cartographies. This journey continues…

Let’s keep in touch: Mapping the periphery

The project title refers to the need to keep contact with the relationships that are always created, and too often lost, in the new territories in which we live.

The Las periféricas collective has embroidered three maps of three peripheral territories outside three different cities in Europe where the Colombian artists of the collective currently reside: Coburg, in Nuremberg; Ripollet, in Barcelona; and Älta in Stockholm. We are navigating in the communitarian aspect of our ancestral communities, supporting as women in a process of migration, recovering our roots through the act of embroidering, talking, caring together but in this case as a virtual meeting every Monday at 6:00 pm.

The collective @lasperifericas_colectiva is conformed by three colombian artists who migrated to Europe and have setablished here in Europe for more than 10 years. This project was born from the constant questioning of our identity as migrants living in 3  different countries: Germany, Spain and Sweden. For example, being hispanic women can limit and expand us at the same time. We live in areas where we are at risk of being racialized on the basis of ethnicity, gender, culture or religion. Our origins, manners and cultural constructions mean that interactions in a given area are very different, challenging us daily. We keep reinventing ourselves, we compare here and there, our present and our past constantly. You can read more about us here: Las periféicas

Role// video performance, 2013 Stockholm.

Clothes as objects of identity. A child’s clothing as a social burden. Stereotypes and standards in the concrete forms of baby clothing, with texts, colors, and images that appear on them. The clothing used for this video is donated by friends and family of different nationalities, many with preconceived notions of gender and the child’s role printed on them. For example: trains, cars, “I don’t want to be a doctor, I want to be superhero etc.” thereby reducing a child’s identity and character to a piece of cloth. What is the need to print this social burden on a texture, in a design, a text or an image? Are blue and pink indestructible identity standards?
